Why Doctrine and Denominations Matter
A recent discussion with students at USA raised the question about the importance of doctrine and denominations. Doctrine comes from the Latin word to teach. Doctrine can be political and unbiblical. Doctrine can result in belief without obedience. Satan and his demons believe in God (James 2:19) but will not obey Him. Church and personal doctrine must be biblically driven and lead us to repentance, faith and obedience to Jesus.
Denominations provide accountability, fellowship and resources to cooperatively make an eternal difference. Acts15 provides a clear biblical example of churches cooperating. They:
• Selected messengers (vss. 13:2, 15:25) who were given “what was necessary” to do God’s work and encourage the churches with reports (vs. 3)
• Corrected inconsistency in teaching (vss. 1, 5). Accountability!
• Convened leaders (vs. 6)
• Studied the scriptures (vs. 15)
• Reported back (vs 30)
• Caused rejoicing and encouragement (vs. 31)
• Referred to active involvement in evangelistic ministry that resulted in new churches (Acts 2:41-42, 14:23, 20:20)
Cooperation is cumbersome. It takes time and commitment. It is not perfect, but it is part of our biblical obedience. Mobile Baptists can accomplish much more together than we can as separate, and separated, congregations.
