Legislative Update 2/26/2021

GAMBLING

As a reminder, on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, Sen. Del Marsh introduced Senate Bill 214 (SB214), calling for a constitutional amendment to be voted on by the citizens of Alabama that would legalize gambling in the state. The bill was voted out of the Senate Tourism Committee that Wednesday by a unanimous vote and Sen. Marsh indicated it would be on the floor of the Senate the next day (Thursday, February 11). He added that he would move that they “carry over” the final vote until after the Legislature’s scheduled 10-day break. This was to give the senators time to hear from their constituents. When they returned on February 23, Marsh indicated that he would not bring the bill to the floor for two weeks. This leads me to believe that he does not have the votes to pass it yet or he is trying to add even more gambling to the bill. Rumor has it that instead of 5-7 casinos, they are now talking about 8-10 casinos throughout the state. Hopefully, we can get constituents to pressure their senators to oppose this bill. We will keep everyone updated by way of our ALCAP Alerts. Everyone still has time to contact their State Senator and urge him/her to vote NO on SB214. Click here if you know your State Senator's name. Click on their picture and fill out the form to continue with your message. Click here if you do not know your State Senator's name. Enter your zip-code. You will be directed to a page where you must scroll down to find your State Legislator.

We are not talking about a simple “paper lottery,” but wide-spread gambling involving electronic gambling devices (slot machines and possibly online gambling “in the palm of your hand”); full-fledged casinos up and down the state; and a compact with the Poarch Creek Indians which would allow them to add a casino in Northeast Alabama near Huntsville and Chattanooga, TN, and now, possibly, a casino in every district of Alabama.

The argument from legislators who favor this bill is that they "just want to allow the people of Alabama to vote on gambling," but what they really mean is they want to allow the big lottery management companies, the casino operators and the tribal gambling bosses to BUY the votes of the people. These gambling enterprises will combine their resources and grossly outspend gambling opponents.

Who will be the opponents? — Mostly the churches which will have to take the precious few ministry and missions dollars they have to fight this constitutional amendment. Gambling (whether you are talking about lottery games or casino gambling) will prey on the poorest people in our state and will lead to many more people losing everything they have on the false promise that they will “strike it rich!” In the end, churches will also lose as they are called upon to help families that will have lost everything they own (including their mortgages) through government-sanctioned and government-sponsored gambling.

International Ministries News, Events and Special Needs

Week of Prayer for Mobile International Ministries March 15 – 21, 2021

In Romans 12:12 we are admonished to “pray without ceasing (HCSB).” it states it this way, “Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer.” Because of the importance of prayer for our International Ministries, we have set aside a week to focus on and to emphasize prayer for the needs and opportunities among internationals in the greater Mobile area as well as thousands of seafarers frequenting the Port of Mobile, the 12th largest in the USA.

Please set aside the week of March 15-21 and join us in praying daily for items that will soon be listed here.

You can join us for the Ministers’ Conference on Monday, March 15 at Camp Whispering Pines, as we utilize that time to begin this important week of prayer for Internationals.

Thank you for faithfully praying with us. Our desire is that many will utilize the prayer cards for focused prayer throughout the year.

HISPANIC CHURCH PLANTER

It is always exciting to see the practical ways that the LORD works. He hears and answers our prayers. His answers are tangible and are often accomplished through His Church (the Living Body of Christ)!

A special thank you to the churches who have offered to sponsor a new Hispanic Church. If the LORD continues to lead as He is now, Dr. Ramon Vielza (from Cuba) and his family will join us to lead this new work. We are praying that they will settle in by June 2021. Several churches have already committed to $100 per month for a three-year period. We still need churches to help fund this new church plant for the first three years. Some families have committed to be a part of the new church which will advance the speed at which this church becomes self-determining, self-propagating, and self-supporting.

Prayer, participation, and giving are essential, but there is also another need. The Vielzas need temporary housing for about six months so that they can get to Mobile and look for appropriate housing while beginning a church. If God leads your church or you to help with this need, please call Dr. Thomas Wright at 251-661-7111 or Gerald at 251-378-1116.

We also depend on tournament sponsors and/or hole sponsors to help us raise funds for International Ministries’ three areas of emphasis: International Churches, the International Language School, and Ministry to Seafarers.

Special Need and Building for Lease

Lawn Care Needed
This past 2020 year, we were blessed to have several churches cut and trim the 5 acre yard at the IMC free of charge. Already this year, the grass growing season has begun. At a bare minimum, we need volunteers who can cut and trim every three weeks. If you can help and/or know someone that can help, please contact Gerald Burch, at 251-661-7111 or at gburch@mobilebaptists.org. If we cannot get volunteers, we appreciate an estimate for cutting and trimming.

International Ministries Center/facility for Lease
The IMC has been for sale for several years. During this last calendar year, we had buyers make legitimate offers only to have them cancel due to failure by the Mobile City District Commissioner to grant the necessary zoning changes. We are interested in leasing it to a church or Non-Profit until we can get approval for a sale. Interested parties should contact Gerald Burch, at 251-661-7111 or at gburch@mobilebaptists.org.

Metro Mobile Baptist Campus Ministries has been hard at work despite the many challenges and changes to ways of doing ministry because of the pandemic. Campus ministers, Jerrod and Beth keep up with many of their students in bible study groups through online platforms.

Baptist Campus Ministries exists to reach, grow and send collegians and to help our churches do the same. We are here to help you, support you, consult with you, strategize with you and partner with you.

Let's take the Gospel to the campus together!
